FLTLNR
The antenna mounted swing gate. Between gate and spare tire. Cable runs down passenger roll bar to "A" piller. Down piller through dash to behind glove box. I have excess cable, stashed behind glovebox. Remote box has power running through cowl directly to batt. SQRLPWR
Maybe a ferrite choke on the power lines will help http://forums.radioreference.com/cb-radio-forum/243182-installed-cb-radio-lots-interference.html
FLTLNR
I dont think I have enough slack to wrap the power lines.

SQRLPWR
we don't know where the source is... my guess is fuel pump/injectors/alternator/or some other part of you ignition inducting the noise into the +ve power line...without an oscilloscope it's going to be hard to know for sure before randomly adding filters/ferrites etc If it was me....I would start (guessing) at the source by trying to eliminate any noise from the power lines feeding the equipment, then move on to the antenna. http://www.powerwerx.com/two-way-radios/mobile-radios/dc-line-noise-filter-oem-t.html Or just live with it.. On mine, my CB power comes from the cigar lighter....probably a dirty source and I have some alternator whine on the white noise when there's no signal, which isn't apparent when transmitting/receiving. Maybe squelch is your friend :)
mrjoecanadian
It's just going to be used on a trail run and you will be within a mile so if you get your swr set as low as possible. You will not have an issue. If you had a big bad radio pushing 100 or more watts than I would worrie about where the wires are routed.
FLTLNR
Does anyone know where a meter can be found?
mrjoecanadian
I know all the Irving truck stops have them, both my cb radios have them built in.
mrjoecanadian
When u pick up an swr meter remember you will need a short pice of coax cable to hook it up.
Eastcoastcam
That is something that I do not have.
Eastcoastcam
Well Steve, I can say with confidence that your antenna is good. Hopefully moving your ground inside giving a shorter ground to the radio box itself will eliminate the interference from the hood sensor. Maybe ask on Jeepforum in the electronics tech section. There will be some there that may be able to address that problem.
FLTLNR
Indeed. Ill try to pick up a meter tomorrow if its open. I was picking up some Spanish on the emergency channel.
mrjoecanadian
If I was home I would just come over and plug my radio in and check your swr for you.
TRUXterra
I have a SWR meter, but won't be in HRM until next weekend, maybe next. Your antenna is also tunable, at least it appears to be based on you above pic. It looks like a set screw that holds the whip antenna to the base, so the whip can be cut to length. You need to run a ground strap from the base of the mount to a good chassis ground. Also need to be sure that the base is isolated from the centre of the coax cable. I'll post a couple pages of reference that I have posted somewhere else before. http://www.firestik.com/Tech_Docs/Testing_Continuity.htm http://www.firestik.com/Tech_Docs/rack-mnt.htm http://www.firestik.com/Tech_Docs/jeeps.htm

The Spanish was probably just "skip" chatter, which is normal. I have a SWR meter, but won't be in HRM until next weekend, maybe next. But it has interference (noise) when the hood is closed, snd the plunger is pushed in for the security system/remote starter. Not sure if this is a grounding issue for the antenna, or the radio itself. But it does function well with decent range despite that issue. It msy just need a noise filter even. FLTLNR
Lol thanks. We isolated the potential issue to the anti theft system. We popped the hood and the noise went away. I manually pressed the hood sensor switch and the noise came back. Shortly there after we closed a door and the noise came back. The alarm system is the only thing they have in common
4x4Mckay
Is your attena on the hood?
FLTLNR
Ok. I see two areas to improve. Sane down the bottom of the mount plate and ground the tail gate. I assume even a speaker wire can do it?
FLTLNR
Nope. Spare tire holder mount.
mrjoecanadian
Just because the radio is working good does not mean the swr is good. If your swr is to high it can burn out your radio.

FLTLNR
Now swr testing done yet. Shipmate has meter he will bring in. I ground down the ground side of the antenna mount. Ran a grounding wire from the antenna plate mounting bolt to inside of tailgate. Then from that bolt to body of jeep. Reception range appears to have increased....I think. Cyclical sounds still present. I will be re running the remote box to a different power source. Possibly in the centre console and see if that removes the alarm system noise.
