sar4x4
Well I had the day 'off' from around home unexpectedly yesterday. So I wanted to the run the 'easy' Renfrew to prepare for the Rally I want to run this fall(?). Years ago I would go alone, without a winch, long before cellphones. Lots of digging out! Now I have big tires, a locker, a winch, and I text out to my bro every hour as safety. (Good job for that, because I smacked my head good, but that is another story not for here.) Down a side road I forgot I had to cut some trees, that during the first Recconnaissance two years(!) ago the Toyota Land Cruiser and the '55 Willys drove right under. Th first bunch was rotten, just a couple of swipes with the axe. Because I forgot the saw...... This bunch wasn't rotton, but a sharp axe made quick work of the softwood. But the last bunch was still growing. And hardwood. This took over an hour to fully clear.

autumnwalker
great pics - next time you go out on a reconnaissance mission give me a call! I like doing that sort of stuff :)
sar4x4
One pic of what might be the 'optional' X-Trail. This route can be nicely challenging during the wet season! And now, for the fun part. The one section of Renfrew that you don't need to go into the ditch to get stuck! I started in two-wheel drive because the hub that gave me trouble earlier this year, and we subsequently worked on, today was making a noise if reversing, locked in, but transfer case in 2WD. With the 37" Krawlers and a locker, she still was sitting pretty in the clay, without trying a 'Crews' fly across manouver! I think the rear, bulky 14-bolt diff was hung up. But I put it in 4wd and the front tires spun nicely and I crawled through easily. So I wanted to see what it would be like to crawl over the trees, if one decided they didn't want to go through the mud.
sar4x4
Turning around. All tires spinning nicely. The west side of the road.
sar4x4
So, I got part way over the trees. I figured my tires and lift were big enough, but I did get hung up. The tires were full of clay. This is the east side of the road. Then with a bit of spinning, of course she slid down into the little ditch. Perfect stuck!
sar4x4
The trusty Warn 8274. My fav winch. After a problem with it being intermittent this spring I had to ground the solenoid pack properly to the motor, and I fixed the electrical plug so it doesn't short out when you drop it against the case. And years ago we made the cable long enough to use it from inside the truck. Oh yeah, it is now a homemade cable and proper switch box, when I bought the winch the cable was long gone. I didn't have my short strap with me. It is on the Willy's body at the moment. I guess I need to put stuff in the Sub and leave it there! I think it will be easier to take the east side now, the trees are broken up. But of course I used 4WD and went back through the mud to head back out after I turned around again! sar4x4
great pics - next time you go out on a reconnaissance mission give me a call! I like doing that sort of stuff :) Will do. This time I just needed a day in the woods alone. Hiking or driving, it didn't matter. Just some down time! There is another section I haven't recce'd yet for a 2nd rally. Sometime this fall we'll get out. I can't take too many folks with me, cause then you can't compete in the rally! But, if you've been on the Renfew Road, you can't be scared of nature's pinstriping! In some spots there were 1 inch or larger diameter trees closing my mirrors for me!
autumnwalker
Pinstripes don't bother me and my mirrors fold in :) Also I'm a good candidate for pre-running as I don't have much interest in running in the rally itself.
TomWood
Looks like good fun, I definitely need to get back into the woods again

autumnwalker
if that's the case mine will be a snug fit. lol agreed. perhaps a saw is in order... are these fallen trees or live? if they're live, perhaps a really careful driver is in order. haha
