Equipment Guidelines

The following lists outline both the required and suggested equipment for any Backcountry 4×4 trail run. This is a generalized list and no consideration has been made for special vehicle requirements or weather conditions.

Required items are listed in bold text.

PERSONAL
  • Driver’s license
  • Appropriate clothing (breathable and weighted to the conditions)
  • Bug spray (Something appropriate for ticks)
  • Change of clothes (including socks and shoes)
  • Food (2,500 calories per day, per person, plus reserve)
  • Hiking or trail shoes and rubber boots
  • Navigation resources (map and compass, GPS, local guidebooks)
  • Solar protection (hat, sunglasses and sunscreen)
  • Water (one gallon of water per day, per person plus reserve)
  • Windproof and waterproof jacket (regardless of conditions)
VEHICLE
  • Front and rear recovery points (subject to inspection)
  • Full-size spare tire (must match tire size on vehicle)
  • Vehicle registration documents
  • Drivetrain fluids
  • Fire extinguisher
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight
  • Jack (suitable for terrain)
  • Jumper cables
  • Recovery strap
  • Shovel
  • Spare parts (appropriate to vehicle)
  • Spill cleanup kit
  • Tool kit (appropriate to vehicle)
  • Winch (appropriate size for vehicle)
