SQRLPWR
could have just been worn out when I got the truck, and with the mud and stress of the spool it may have just deteriorated really quickly.
SQRLPWR
got my sliding windows installed. actually an easier job than I expected. just lost the end of the rope on the last 6 inches, but that was easily fixed. also whilst the window was out I took the opportunity to replace the 'dissolving' plastic trim. next...windshield is coming out on left 'new' - old pair on right had been cut by the PO for some reason ? autumnwalker
I love the sliding rear window in my truck. It creates a really nice breeze when you have it opened and another front window cracked. Venting the sunroof with the sliding rear glass open works super well.
SQRLPWR
Started replacing the valve cover gaskets due to a massive leak....10 minute job escalated. Maybe one day I'll be able to buy some nice billet covers, but for now the pitted rust is covered in black.
SQRLPWR
I didnt prep the covers much and the paint turned out horrible, so they'll get some sanding later for the next coat
SQRLPWR
Decided to change the colour to silver to help detect any further leaks....and because I had a spare can of silver. Ordered an new PCV valve and PCV grommet, because the grommet is rock hard, and the pair together is cheap to buy.
autumnwalker
Good idea @ color change. I love the way "old" engines look vs. the plastic masses that the new engines are. I was looking at my HEMI yesterday and you have to look pretty deep to see a valve cover.
SQRLPWR
They put all that plastic there for aesthetics, cooling and to deter owners from tinkering. I also prefer to see the engine
autumnwalker
Yeah. It's pretty silly. You even have to remove the plastic cover on the Jeep to do an oil change. Extra junk imo.
SQRLPWR
On the last couple of drives I noticed a hissing sound coming from the steering wheel for a few seconds area after I shut off the engine. Brake pedal feel is normal with the engine on and off, I'm not loosing brake fluid, the booster looks in good shape and the vacuum hose looks good too. I have an aftermarket manifold vacuum gauge, which is still working. Hopefully it's the gauge and not the booster.

autumnwalker
I wouldn't have thought the master cylinder (due to lack of awareness). That gauge sounds suspect though.
SQRLPWR
Something let go on the trail yesterday as we noticed only one rear wheel was turning. When jacking up the rear one wheel was free to turn, and the other wasnt, then it would switch sides. So we made a quick exit and I made it home with some cracking and crunching (on video) On disassembly, it seems they didnt understand the operation of this locker as they pressed in the spring loaded pins, installed doubled up springs with no pins. They also kept the thust washers. No wonder it didnt unlock LMAO Thankfully everything in the carrier survived, just need to replace the Spartan. SQRLPWR
Ok so I think I have this scooby doo mystery solved. When they installed the Sparan, they kept the shims because the side gears plus driver without shims is 1.17", which falls short of the required height of 1.1950". With shims the measurement is 1.2". The instructions clearly state new side gears must be ordered if the deck height is too small, and nothing to say shims are acceptable. Keeping the shims must have gotten something out of whack. So I cant reorder the same because I'll need to also buy the side gears. I might just put the open carrier in from my parts axle for now and try and source a Trutrac or something else. autumnwalker
Glad you got it figured out @ovrlndr! I wonder why shims would not work in that situation? Isn't using shims how you would typically gap a ring gear?

I had trouble with the factory 1/2 ton rated limited slip. Couldn’t handle the abuse of larger tires. Once I went 1 ton, I installed a Detroit Locker. Couldn’t be happier. No fuss, no breakage, it just downright works! It might be too heavy for a 1/2 Ton rated axle, but quite right for the ‘Burly Burb’. Your 9inch would be plenty stout! SQRLPWR
A few updates.... Decided to replace the Spartan with open gears. The old girl cruises around a lot smoother now I have a winch, so no great loss. With all of the trouble I've had with permanently locked diffs, I'm thinking I'd like to save up for a select-able locker....one day. We'll see. Fixed the pinion leak. First thought it was the seal, but on taking the yoke off it was clearly caused by a big groove where the seal rides on the yoke. Yoke replaced. 'Made' an extension piece for my CB antenna, because I seem to have a dead zone where some rigs behind me cant hear me TX. Now it's ~16 inches higher, so I hope that helps a little. SQRLPWR
So I get to coffee tonight and noticed my power steering box didnt want to hold fluid any more....big puddle. When I bought the junk yard pitman arm for my SAS it came with a box...and it's the junk yard box that leaked. I swapped my old box because it had a snapped bolt, but my new welder took care of that, no sweat. Man i love this welder and gas
autumnwalker
Sweet! You're building a new 1982 Ferd one part at a time I think the JK may need a steering box ... steering slop is getting worse and there is now a clunk that I feel in the wheel. There is nothing loose that I can see!
SQRLPWR
Thankfully these old trucks are simple to work on, albeit huge and heavy, so I should have the box swapped in no time. i might even address the slop in the intermittent shaft whilst I'm at it lol. You might have a bad joint or bushing making the clunk maybe?
