Worked on Rogue for a couple hours.  Took that long to remove ecu/battery tray and find/clean/install a new ground strap.  Engine still not working, but things are better, if that can be said!

Engine starts, idles for about 3 seconds, then dies.  Strong smell of fuel.  I haven't got to read diagnostic codes yet...........

No Service Engine Soon light, but battery light is on,..........

Subaru:  Spoke too soon and anyway I didn't really believe that a fluid change would fix everything.  Power steering starting to falter once in a while.  Fluid at correct level, no foam, belt at correct tension.

Hmmmmm. No, BUT that makes me think. It has a transponder key. The general consensus is that with a bad /non-transponder key either the engine won’t start and/or after three times it locks you out and you tow it to the dealer.  But, I can’t find anything to verify that on-line.  In fact, there is some doubt about that on-line!  And starting but immediately shutting off sounds like a good anti-theft method!  So, I’ll be trying that sometime over the next couple evenings!  (Car is 15 minutes from  home....).  Thanks for the idea!

also somebody found an ECU reset helped - not 100% sure this is the correct one for the Rogue http://forums.nicoclub.com/reset-ecu-accelerator-throttle-idle-t595740.html

It does sounds like a transponder key issue.  A lot of cars will start, run for a few seconds, then die if a transponder key isn't detected.

If the battery light is on, with how sensitive newer vehicles are to having the correct voltage, that could also be your issue.

Before Jawritch’s post:

After running the scanner tool unsuccessfully and posting here, I tried the car again.

And it is currently working! Took it home, left the Scout at my brother’s.  Fingers crossed..

IF it continues to work, I’ll think the computer had to finally reset.  After being messed up with a bad ground on the car.  Dunno.

Car still working today!  Chatted briefly with a Nissan tech I know at O'Regan's.  He's seen this problem before. Common enough. Even knew the ground strap I mentioned. And told me to check the main ground if I have any more trouble.  And that when unhooking the battery repeatedly it often clears all engine codes. And to go to Kenny U-Pull for a small part I broke............ lol

Yeah, rhymes with Fiddle Yeast

Can't wait to get home and finish up the Eagle. Have a rebuilt D35 with limited slip to install once the leaf spring perches are revershed, a few seals to replace, and need to mount the front differential properly.

Been kind of looking for an Iltis as well
