derekmac
My Jeep has been vibrating when driving 80 and above, and I had thought it was the M/T's causing it. I checked the front driveshaft, and the axle side u-joint had play. I took the shaft off, and when I put it on the bench to check it all over, I noticed that the slip section has some rotational play in it also. I took the shaft apart to check the splines, and they looked OK, maybe a tad worn. I cleaned the splines, and with no grease, there's a bit of side to side movement as well. So, should there be any movement in the slip section at all, or should it be tight? The bad u-joint has less than 1mm of play, but the rearview mirror looks like I have a couple of subs pounding away in the back of the Jeep, lol. I took it on the highway with the shaft out, and it's smooth as glass.
SQRLPWR
my guess is there should be minimal/no play in the splines, or they'd eventually eat themselves. My internet mechanicing came across this - post #8 http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/front-driveshaft-slip-joint-rebuild-cost-660836/#post6274445
