Pulled the tcase ebrake in order to replace the old leaky output shaft seal. Called around to get new shoes. Seems nobody lists this setup, so I'm not able to get new shoes.

I'm gonna use parts off the yellow one to convert to ebrake to use the rear drums. The backing plates are from that setup, so I should just need to find cables, since the yellow ones are no good.

Also found a bad u-joint on the rear driveshaft.

I believe it is an older sj410 setup if you are having trouble finding parts listings

I searched a bit on G and that confirms what I found!  Now what is the best course of action, I have no idea.  There's lots of Zuk specialists on the web!  And ideas.  Aftermarket driveshaft beak, disc brake conversions, etc.

This is a factory set up that is on there now,  you are right, tons of aftermarket for discs and such, also, is there anybody that can just reline the shoes anymore?

Mine's an 85 - early Sami, which only ran till 88.5....so parts unique to it seem to be hard to find locally.

No matter, I've ordered the front-to-left and right ebrake cables, so I'll just convert to ebrake on the rear drums since the drums I got off Chad came from a rig with that setup and have all the parts required.

Drained the rear end....well tried, she aint flowing too good LOL

Made an exhaust pipe extension because the pipe exits at my seat, and it's no fun getting gassed LOL :)

Replaced a bad rear driveshaft ujoint

Bought a big old drum of 80/90 GL-5 for the diffs, tcase & trans....all uses the same oil apparently.

LOL...sure dont smell like caramel :)

Tcase oil seal is in. Interestingly, the old seal was sitting a hair above the surface. When I installed the new seal, it sat 1/4 inch inside the hole. IDK if that means anything...maybe too much tcase pressure blowing the seal out ?

Rear diff has fresh oil and I took it out for a drive without the rear driveshaft in FWD. The whine is still there.

So, I'm gonna throw in the yellow tcase.

Dave seems to think early vs late Sami tcases are different. My guess is just the rear output flange vs. Ebrake setup.

I'll see when I pull it out :)

...of course it could be the transmission whining too.

Where is the whine?  Because of course if its in the rear end the ring and pinion could still whine as its turned by the axle shafts. However, I'd guess with the strain on the r and p coming from the ring side from the axle shafts and not the pinion side from the driveshaft the whine would be a very different pitch if at all.  Dunno!

I'd heard nothing since ordering the parking brake cables from The Wrench Monkey. So I called them. Seems they were sat on my order (again) because they didn't have stock, even tho their web page said in stock. A call or email would have been nice. That's strike 2.
Order cancelled and Rockauto order placed.

I pulled the shafts outta the yellow one and will swap the tcase ends since they're on a slip yoke :)

No that it matters but I'm confused when you say slip yoke.  I only see flanged tc yokes in the pictures, meaning there is a slip joint in the driveshaft (or propeller shaft as the Japanese manuals call them).  Those flanges are usually mounted on a splined (output) shaft, presumably with a staked nut holding them on?

Also, I just found out the early 410 tcases have a 12% reduction from the later 413 tcases

So there are 3 Sami/SJ tcases;

  • Early 410 - no 4x4 switch, small shafts. Small yoke bolt pattern. Flanges not interchangeable to late 410 or 413. 12% gear reduction from 413.
  • Late 410 - 4x4 switch, larger shafts. Small yoke bolt pattern. Flanges will swap to 413.
  • 413 - 4x4 switch, larger shafts. Larger yoke bolt pattern. Flanges will swap to late 410.

My '85 SJ has the late 410 tcase.....but who's to say it's original to the Sami ?  ...probably not.

If my noise is still apparent after my 413 swap, then I'll be going back to the 410 ;)

Divorced T-case?  Despite my being picky on the slip yoke business, I hadn't even noticed the implication of three flanges in the picture!  The 'jack shaft' between the transmission and the transfer case must be mighty short, as well as the rear driveshaft?  Keep it 'stock' height or you will have driveshaft and pinion angle problems?

I ordered a strapped bikini top, 2 weeks before the Summer Event hoping it would arrive in time. Well, I've been trying to get hold of the guy I bought it off, but no luck.

I had a pleasant surprise for me in the mailbox yesterday ! :) Best of all, he sent it USPS....no duty ;)

I'm missing the original soft top hoop, and that's where the rear straps are meant to attach. The hoops seem to be rare, so I'll probably get something boat-ish to hook the strap around.

Do you have a hard top or full soft top for the winter?  I forget if you've mentioned it before.

And now I've got the idea in my head that I'm putting my hard top on for the cooler months....  Maybe run the bikini top next summer....  such choices!
