derekmac
I had to do a quick mock-up of the front fenders. It was hard not to crank the welder up, but I ordered a new welding helmet for this project. Mines an auto darkening, but a shade 11, and I find it too dark. When Matt let me borrow his adjustable one, it was sooo much easier to see what I was doing. I figured this project deserved me being able to see what I'm doing. SQRLPWR
So what's the plan; stitch or seam? i would imagine you'd wanna keep the heat down on the sheets.
derekmac
The sheet metal is 16 gauge, so my plan is to tack everything, then stitch weld, but move around to help keep things cool. I'll use a seam sealer to keep dirt from building up and causing it to rust. It'll be all inside welds too, so it should look pretty clean on the outside. The key will be clamps, clamps and more clamps! I'll need to keep the skins as tight to the tubes as I can.

derekmac
OK, so I might be slightly impatient. I have one front fender about 95% done. I tell ya, welding sheet metal to tube isn't all that fun, lol. Of course, if I knew what I was doing, it might be easier!
SQRLPWR
Yeah I hate burning the thin stuff. Looks great so far !

derekmac
I just gave it a try, and I find it much clearer and easier to see the puddle and what it's doing.
derekmac
OK, I need you guys opinion. Most pics of seen of Jeeps that had the same or similar fenders all had them painted black. I'm not sure if I want black... Should I color match them with the Jeep, or go with a different shade of grey like what the current plastic flares are? SQRLPWR
I kinda like the two tone thing. Colour coded could look cool too, or maybe a graphite grey....or orange, yeah orange the whole GD jeep
TomWood
Why not just clearcoat and keep the metal look? I like how they look in the raw steel lol

sar4x4
I like two tone. Black is neutral and goes with everything. Thin blue stripes are nice on gray. But I hear ya. In other words, I have no good suggestions! lol

Lil'monster
Man if it is going to make your jeep look like that I would deffinitly go with silver

derekmac
OK, so I'm going to go with silver, but I think I might do the tubing black to break it up a little. If I don't like it, it'll be easy enough to re-spray. Here's how it looks painted.
