Cherokee Chief Hood and Cowl

Cherokee Chief

Recommended Posts

Well its time to start a new build thread. The ole Cherokee Chief had a Doctor's visit a month or so ago and well it wasn't good. He condemned it. So I went for a second opinion and well that one was no better.
I have sense tore apart and sold off some of the ole Chief and started to rebuild her.
The ole Cherokee Chief will be getting a face lift, tummy tuck, boob job, nose job and Lypo suction and any other plastic surgery I can come up with. All staying into the Jeep theme by using the Cowel, hood, front fenders, and front header panel with lights.
I am basing this buggy of a 1/10 scale Axial Wraith. It will be a 4 seater and its power plant will be a 4.0l auto with a 231/205 doubler, D44up front and a 9" in the rear gearing will start out with the stock 3:55. Tires will be 37"MTR of course.
Chassis will be built by Andy (geaser). Andy will be taking pictures of everything being done as he goes along with the build. After he has made me a rolling chassis I will bring it home to finish the buggy's interior, engine wiring and all the other thousand of things to be done.
This is what its going to look like when done.

Andy started my chassies last night and this is how he made out.

First thing was to get the drivetrain up on the table. This sets the drivetrain at ride height which is 20" at the skid.

PA010002.jpg

Then started to bend some tube.

PA010005.jpg

The main rails mocked in place.

PA010006.jpg

PA010007-Copy.jpg

PA010011.jpg

Then I bent the front cross member/winch mount. The front rails are not cut to the correct length yet.

PA010012.jpg

Stuck the seat in place to help me "visualize".

PA010015.jpg

made up some tube supports.

PA020016.jpg

PA020017.jpg

Then added the rear cross member.

PA020018.jpg

Bent up the outer chassis rail.

PA020019.jpg

And started adding floor supports.

I went down to Andy's place tonight to help out on the Buggy Build.

Andy gave me the job of assembling the front clip so he can visualize and measure for the tubing.

So I spring into action and quickly assemble the fenders and hood and tack them all together so its easier to handle.

PA040023.jpg

PA040027.jpg

Then it was on to the 9" cutting off the old spring perches and shock mounts. Wont be needing them any more.

PA040025.jpg

Lots of dust in the air, making the pictures turn out funny.

PA040026.jpg

All cut off now just have to clean it up.

PA040028.jpg

Andy stood around and talked all night ::), but he did manage to bend up some pipe. He made the B pillar bars and the lower skid bars for later installments.

We installed the front clip and set the wheelbase to 110 and stuck some 35" tires up against it to get a visualization on what she going to look like.

Andy got some more done on the chassis this week after taking a week off to get his own crap done.

Got the floor section all done and started on the right side door bar.

PA160086.jpg

PA160087.jpg

PA160088.jpg

Got the B-Pillar in place 30* rake.

PA160089.jpg

PA160090.jpg

Don't know what the hell I was doing here. lol

PA170092.jpg

Getting set up for the A-Piller, with the ole masking tape to see if it will work.

PA170093.jpg

Got the A-Piller bar all bent and tacked in place to see if its OK. At 50* rake its looking good. A little smokey in the shop. ;D

PA170097.jpg

PA170098.jpg

This things going to look fast sitting still. 8-).

i wanted to keep the front sheet metal full width, but due to the front diff being set foreword quite a bit, I had to pinch the front sheet metal so I will be able flex withe the big boys.

So with a bit of measuring and staring at the front we decided to remove 18" out of the center. So out comes the saws all and cut off wheel and ca-ching its in 2 pieces. no turning back now.

PA170093.jpg

PA170099.jpg

All narrowed

PA170094.jpg

Installed the fenders and cowl to the front header and installed on frame to check it out.

PA170095.jpg

PA170096.jpg

Crap now the hood won't fit, hood is now 3 inches too long, so now we got to lengthen the fenders 3 inches now.

PA170099.jpg

That's better. 8-)

PA180102.jpg

PA180103.jpg

PA180104.jpg

From the drivers seat.

PA180106.jpg

PA180105.jpg

Cut the grill to fit, looks good, 4 sections exactly.

PA170101.jpg

I'm really impressed on how it turned out, really ;D

Went down to Andy's today to get some more done on the buggy.

I started the day off stripping the guts out of my D44 and swapped them into a D44 that Andy had kicking around, it has stronger tubes than mine but the long side has to be shortened about a inch to fit my axle shaft, no biggie.

PA190108.jpg

then I cleaned up the diff of all its mounts that I will not be using.

PA200113.jpg

While I was doing that |Andy was working on the tubing for the cabin portion of the buggy.

PA190109.jpg

PA200110.jpg

PA200111.jpg

I just had to take it for a spin. lol

Andy was back at it again tonight and installed the DS A-Pillar bar in along with the door "X".

PA230121-Copy.jpg

Next he bent and installed the "Angry Eyebrow"

PA230122-Copy.jpg

next he dug out the tubing roller and started rolling the dash bar.

PA230123-Copy.jpg

nice even roll

PA230124-Copy.jpg

pulled the 2 A-Pillar's together to set the width

PA230125-Copy.jpg

all set in place

PA230126-Copy.jpg

matched the curve pretty good

PA230127-Copy.jpg

PA230128-Copy.jpg

This picture showes another A-Pillar bar installed just for cosmetic reasons,

PA230134.jpg

The cabin starting to come together rather nicely.

Well another trip to Andy's tonight to get more work done on the buggy.

I had to shorten the long side of the front diff so off grinding I go.

PA250139.jpg

Knuckle off, now I have to cut off 1" and re install the knuckle.

PA250140.jpg

I forgot to take picture of it reinstalled but its on there.

I finely got to bend some tube, not as easy as I thought lol

PA250141.jpg

I bent the tube for the top portion of my dash.

PA250143.jpg

Andy cut out the rear bar behind the seat and bent up another one to add some more length in the cab.
