autumnwalker
Anyone know where I can find Mobil 1 gear oil in Halifax? I'm not too keen on buying the "grape juice" from GM at the outrageous prices they charge. The Mobil 1 is supposed to meet the GM spec and be much cheaper... if you can find it. UPDATE: I called the dealership just to see - the GM stuff is $16.65 per 946ml bottle. I've been told I need about 5 bottles, so that's an expensive trip for gear lube! What are you guys running for gear lube? I found Castrol SYNTEC for $6.79/bottle. Not sure how I feel about Castrol though. It gets mixed reviews online. I came across this study done by AMSOIL which compares the different gear oils (surprise, theirs wins), but it indicates that the Castrol is similar to the GM except it scores worse in its foaming properties, in fact... it fails that test.GearLubeWhitePaper.pdf
RobertMcC
Anyone who sells mobile 1 should have it...Just needs to meet GL5? Or just start looking at gear oil and find out what each meets. CT or Carquest//Napa prolly have something.
autumnwalker
Actually, most Mobil 1 dealers don't have it - I have called several. CT only has the Motomaster brand oil. I'm on the phone with Carquest now, NAPA will be next.
autumnwalker
So the only Mobil 1 I can find comes in a 20L bucket, which is $200 and way more than I need. The GM stuff is $16.65 per bottle from the dealership (946 ml) NAPA has Castrol SYNTEC for $6.79. Why the hell is gear lube so hard to find? TomWood
Ive heard good things about AMSOIL, but dont know how much per bottle it is. Im going to be switching to it here shortly. Last time I had to get some, got it at Chrysler and paid out the *** for it.
autumnwalker
I know a couple Amsoil dealers and I know their motorcycle engine oil is top notch. Unfortunately nobody has it in stock.

autumnwalker
Let me check my source, may have it in stock, need 5 quarts of it right? Yes, 5 QT; 2 for front and 3 for rear.
autumnwalker
APJ doesn't stock it and CVO doesn't either. Auto Choice (suggested by CVO) happens to have a Lucas 75w-90, but it is awful stuff according to Googles and that Amsoil report.
Cherokee96
Might as well buy the 20L if you have the money.... You will need it again anyways and you won't have to search for it next time! My rear took 5l alone when I put my new diff cover on, not sure if yours fill like mine though.

RobertMcC
Always have extra, just incase of spillage. Fact you got a leak, means prolly water and moisture can get in, Thus you need to flush any crap out. I run whatever, I often change the fluid. autumnwalker
I ended up going with the GM stuff - dealer gave me a "preferred customer discount" and I got a good price (cheaper than Amsoil!). Front diff took about 2 bottles, rear took 3.
